What's Going Wrong With Your Toilet?

A toilet that keeps running, phantom flushes on its own, or a cistern that's not filling properly after each use usually points to a worn fill valve, outlet valve or perished seal inside the cistern. A weak or half-hearted flush often means the water level is set too low, the jet holes under the rim are partially blocked, or the double flush button isn't dropping the outlet valve correctly. Left alone, a constantly running cistern or a broken half flush can quietly add to your water usage and eventually lead to a cistern overflowing onto the bathroom floor.

Blocked toilets are just as familiar to us, whether it's wipes, nappies, a child's toy or too much paper caught in the trap after one flush. If a plunger hasn't cleared it and the pan keeps backing up or overflowing, the blockage may sit further down the sewer line rather than in the pan itself, particularly if more than one toilet in the property is affected. A toilet rocking loose on its base, leaking at the pan collar, or letting off a sewer smell and gurgling sound when you flush usually points to a failed wax ring or seal that needs attention before the leak spreads under the tiles.

Concealed and in-wall cisterns bring their own quirks too, from a button that sticks to a Geberit valve that's stopped sealing properly. Older high-level and slimline cisterns can also develop condensation, water hammer or a noisy fill that's tricky to diagnose without trade experience. None of these problems tend to fix themselves, and the longer a leaking or blocked toilet sits, the more damage it can cause to floors, subfloors and ceilings below.
